Less Stress, More Love

How’s your relationship with yourself doing?  Mine is going through some ups and downs, as all good love affairs experience, but I am fiercely focused on this relationship right now.  Getting to know myself intimately, opening up those secret passage ways that have been closed for too long, bringing all parts of me into the light so every element can be loved and integrated.

“Like an ecosystem whose stability and magnificence increases with diversity, the whole person gains beauty and stability as more and more parts become integrated.” ~Anodea Judith

This kind of integration is no small task and requires serious dedication and devotion.  Who has time for that??  Time is a huge issue for most of us, especially if we have big dreams, lofty goals, and high expectations of ourselves and of life in general.  It is easy to feel overwhelmed, and to get down on ourselves for not completing every task we lay out on our to-do list in as timely a manner as we might like.  We feel as though we are not doing enough, not focused enough, not working hard enough, and inevitably, that translates into feeling like we are not enough, the antithesis of self-love.

Here is a simple and effective tool for acknowledging your hard work and keeping feelings of stress at bay: take a brief moment to recognize your accomplishments, big and small, all throughout the day by congratulating yourself for each individual achievement.  Literally dialogue with yourself.  It goes something like this:

“Wow Sash, you just called your insurance company and had them switch your payments to a different account.  That’s awesome!  Good job.”

This may sound ridiculous, but it pulls you right into the present moment, gives you a little burst of self-loving energy juice, and inspires you to continue on the road of accomplishment rather than paralyzing yourself with fear of your own expectations.  One thing at a time, one task at a time, one moment at a time.  Then when you make it through something big, you can break out the big applause and truly celebrate the abundance of your efforts.

On Saturday evening, I led three couples through a 2-hour Thai yoga massage partner workshop.  Afterwards, as I was cleaning up and reflecting on the event, I thought to myself, “Wow, you just held space for these three loving couples to connect with each other on an intimate level, generating a beautiful atmosphere of trust and fluid gratitude that they can now take home with them and enjoy for the rest of the weekend.  Amazing!”  Being the person I am, I could easily have switched right into to-do mode, thinking something like, “cool, that’s done, now onto my taxes.”  Yet taking that simple moment to acknowledge what I had helped to create solidified the experience in my heart.  It filled me with joy and appreciation for the work I had the privilege of sharing that night, and for the willingness of the participants to share their energy so freely.

The heart is the center of our energetic chakra system, just as love is the binding force of the Universe.  Having a healthy, glowing heart center is a service to you and to humanity at large.  In order for that to be your reality, self-acceptance is vital.

So sing your praises and do it regularly!  I just did a load of laundry, woo hoo!  Dishes done and sparkling, now my heart feels sparkly too.  Finished that big project at work, I am a rock star.  Hmm, now I’ll go buy that man on the street a cup of hot tea because my heart feels full and generous, rather than depleted.  Now I can share my love more freely because I am loving myself and taking care of my precious heart.  Now I can connect with those around me because I am in the present moment, accepting exactly where I am right now, without feelings of lack, insufficiency or anxiety.

You are enough.  You are doing enough.  Tell yourself that, and go share your beautiful nurtured heart with the world.

Happy Heart Day,
