There’s a lot of talk about antiperspirant and it’s possible dangers, which include Alzheimer’s and breast cancer. This is primarily due to its aluminum content, and its application in close proximity to breast tissue, on skin that is shaved often and sometimes nicked.
Is it true? I don’t know. If you Google it, it’s a mixed bag, with most medical sites claiming “no conclusive evidence.” Here’s what I do know about antiperspirant: it stains your clothes, gives you an overly perfumey-chemically smell, is hard to completely remove in the shower, and can lose it’s effectiveness over time.
Over the years as my lifestyle has shifted and my diet become ultra clean, I’ve made an effort to use as many natural based products as possible. I just like natural better. It feels better, smells better, and makes me feel good about what I’m applying to my skin and how it may or may not affect the environment.
I was terrified to stop using antiperspirant! I’m a yoga teacher and Thai yoga massage therapist. Being stinky is not an option, no matter how much of a natural girl I am. But I just wasn’t feeling good about rubbing potentially toxic chemicals into my precious clean-shaven pits.
After asking around and trying a few different products, I found the perfect combo for me: Herbal Magic Roll-On Deodorant (I like the jasmine and herbal scents) and a spritz of Weleda Wild Rose Deodorant. I smell fresh and clean, and it lasts through yoga class and massage sessions. I do reapply the roll-on a couple times a day, but my clothes are stain free and it rinses right off in the shower, allowing me to go to bed feeling free of toxins and antiperspirant residue.
I recommend this to you because so many women (and men) are afraid to put their Secret away and try something natural. I understand, and there are a lot of products out there that really don’t work. You have to experiment a little and find one that works with your chemistry, but the above has really worked well for me (going on at least 2 years now). Also, Herbal Magic was recommended to me by a man, an attorney no less, so you know he can’t be at the office smelling like a hippy.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes. In the comments below, share any recommendations you have for natural deodorant that works, or anything that’s holding you back from trying it.
Yours in natural body care,
