Take This Necessary Step to Follow Through

Here’s the most important action you can take for getting something done: put it in your calendar. Whether it’s going to yoga, making an important phone call, paying a bill, or seeing an art exhibit, if you don’t schedule it in, chances are it won’t happen. This is especially true with self-care, if it isn’t yet a habit for you.

The biggest obstacle people claim when it comes to fitness, wellness, and self-care is “I don’t have time.” Well here’s the news, no one does! For absolutely anything in your life, if you want to do it, you have to make time for it. And the only way to do that is to put it in your schedule and make it as non-negotiable as an important work meeting.

I’m pretty strict with myself when it comes to my self-care activities. However, with my unpredictable client schedule week-to-week, if I don’t calendar certain things in, I won’t get to it, especially if it’s something new I want to try.

For example, I’ve been dying to make dance classes a regular part of my schedule. I’ve been eyeing a certain dance studio for ages, looking at their schedule, reading about their classes, but not making the commitment to go. Finally, last week, I chose Afro Funk, I put it on my schedule, and I invited a friend to join me (that’s the icing on the cake that will really get your butt there). The class was intimidating and super challenging, but also very fun and following through felt amazing.

Here’s what I do to make sure my self-care activities are a regular part of my life:

  • Meditation and Yoga: I wake up early, 6am, to meditate and do yoga each morning (except Sundays, my day off).
  • To-do list: At the start of each week, I make my to-do list, and schedule in those to-do’s around my private client and class teaching schedule.
  • Yoga Class: I schedule in the yoga classes I want to take (class with my teacher is on my schedule weekly).
  • Cardio: I decided when I want to hike and when I want to go to dance class and schedule those in as well. If it’s something I might chicken out on, I invite a friend to add an extra layer of accountability.
  • Bodywork: I schedule massages/bodywork a month in advance so it’s not something I keep putting off until “I have time.”

Life is unpredictable, and being fluid and flexible is important to maintaining your sanity (starting the day with meditation and yoga helps with that!). Obviously sometimes it’s necessary to shuffle things around and make last minute changes. Here’s the beauty of it all though. When you get organized and make commitments that further your health, happiness, and wellbeing, the Universe tends to align in your favor.

Really the world isn’t working against you. Usually it’s you working against you. Make the commitment, schedule it in, and follow through. Once you get in the habit of doing this, self-care will just be what you do, and there will be no more excuses.

Take action now:

1)    Pick one thing you want to do related to your self-care (exercise, meditation, etc.) and schedule it in now. If you haven’t yet scheduled your next Private Yoga or Thai Yoga Massage session with me, do it now.

2)    In the comments below, let us know what you committed to and when you’re doing it, so we can cheer you on!

  1. OK, you got me. I bought a private yoga session with you and still haven’t scheduled it yet… so I’m committing to doing that now!

  2. What works for me is once I have decided what I want to do (for example yoga)…. I purchase as many sessions I can in advance. Then I am committed. After that it’s fairly easy to follow through with it once the money is spent.

    1. It’s so true Kirby. Once you make a financial commitment to something you want to be sure and follow through, to at least get your money’s worth! Thanks for taking the plunge with Yoga and Thai Yoga Massage.
