It is no secret that I am passionate about wellness. I firmly believe that if everyone were more focused on their own personal self-care, the world would be filled with joyful, energetic, and enthusiastically generous beings.
I have many self-care practices in my life, some daily, some weekly, some monthly, and some yearly, including yoga, hiking, dancing, traveling and eating copious amounts of green vegetables. For the most part it’s impossible to rank these elements of my life as I feel they are all integral to the wellness of my body, mind, and spirit.
However, there is one thing that I do that I place on top, that if I can only fit in one self-care practice in a day, then this is it. Meditation.
It wasn’t always this way. Finding my way to a consistent meditation practice was a long and meandering road. Exercise was important to me from the age of 13. Yoga and eating healthy made grand showings and huge leaps and bounds in how I felt about life and myself, but meditation was the icing on the wellness cupcake, and now the glue that binds it all together.
Anxious, angry, short-tempered, stubborn, fearful, lacking in self-love. There were moments of calm and peace, usually when exercising or doing yoga or painting. The undercurrents of wellness were there, and the desire and motivation were there, but the energy was very dispersed.
Calm, centered, focused, hopeful, present, joyful, enthusiastic, continuously expanding self-love. All of the emotions and states of being listed in the “before” picture are still present, but lovingly contained and manageable. I feel them, then rather than attaching to them, I either let them go or take the steps to transform them. Perfect serenity all the time? Hardly. But I’m better than I’ve ever been, with an over-current of bliss rather than anxiety.
Most people are on board with needing to exercise and eat right. You spend the time and money to take care of your body, but what about your mind and spirit? Yes, they are served by clean diet and movement, but not directly addressed. With the constant stream of distraction and stimulation that surrounds us, I find it more important than ever to spend quiet, uninterrupted time with yourself on a daily basis. There’s nothing to be afraid of! It’s a magical and thrilling journey that leads to an ocean of peace that you’ll want to immerse yourself in regularly.
