Detox your space

I am moving next week and as of today have packed a grand total of one box! It’s a little bit of denial coupled nicely with a heavy dose of procrastination. Yet, I am excited for this process! Why?


Because I love to purge! I’ve moved a lot throughout my life, as a kid and as an adult. Every move is an opportunity to clear out the excess, the extraneous, the broken, the worn-out, the ugly and the useless. I’ve become pretty adept at letting go of “stuff.”

However, this time I’m taking the cleaning out process to a new level. I’m detoxing my space of anything that energetically represents something or someone from the past that it’s time to release. Meaning, the things that tend to move with me just because I’ve had them in my life for a while and haven’t questioned their presence are going through a whole different kind of screening process.


It may sound silly, but everything holds energy, and whether we’re conscious of it or not, what we surround ourselves with, including our possessions, has an effect on us. I know for me there are items from past relationships, past careers, and past lifetimes that occupy my space both physically and energetically. I am thrilled for this new chapter in my life and with that comes a desire to completely release any lingering attachments that might in any way be preventing me from fully experiencing this present moment and all it has to offer.


No, I am not throwing all of my childhood photo albums in the trash. I am being selective of the things that I see and interact with on a daily basis and taking with me only those items that give me great joy and represent who I am in my life today. I know that what I choose to part with will bring joy to someone else’s life, and clear space in my own for new fresh energy to enter.


I invite you to take action as well and do a little spring-cleaning of your own, whether you’ve moving or staying put. Survey your surroundings and take stock of the things you have collected over the years, particularly from past relationships and old jobs, which perhaps would serve you best if you part ways.     You are SO RIGHT about this, and it’s something that has been heavy on my mind lately. I read somewhere that the spaces around you are a representation about where you’re at, and how you feel about life. If you walk through my apartment, you’ll see that I have a tendency of taking things out, and never putting them back in the right place. This post makes me want to stay more organized and get rid of any unnecessary items that are just taking up space + sucking energy! THANKS, girl!

    1. You are welcome! There’s nothing quite like that feeling when your surroundings are neat and organized. Like you can breath more freely. It’s a constant process. I try to make a little ritual of cleaning up/picking up after every meal. Doesn’t always happen, but for the most part it keeps my space in check 🙂 Love you!


  2. Having just moved recently, I concur that the process you’re talking about is very freeing. I found that in addition to getting rid of unwanted stuff, I was also taking the opportunity to truly treasure the things I DID want to keep. Thinking about what they meant to me, cleaning them, packing them with care… the whole process was a meditation of gratitude. Good luck with the move and I look forward to our final massage in your lovely home.


  3. Sasha, I have so much that has accumulated in my long life. The easiest thing to get rid of is clothes (bags at a time). I often wonder where it all comes from. The last time I moved, 5 years ago, I got rid of so much furniture and it seems that there is still too much furniture. Fact is, I would like it to be different furniture now. I can remember a time when everything was super Zen … zabutons and a low table, a bed and kitchen utensils, not much else. What happened? I long for an empty room with my buddhas, candles, incense and a yoga mat. I will make my Ganesh more prominent and practice the mantra: Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha and allow Source to guide me in my house cleaning out process. Currently, getting rid of books. Oh, so many books. Is there a mantra for bookaholism? ♥ Blessings.

  4. I absolutely love this idea Sash! You have inspired me to take action. I will remove photos of past relationships from my place even if they are hidden! LOL. But what to do with them? Burn them? Hide them somewhere farther away? I do know I want them out of my living space. I also think my Facebook identity needs a facelift. I need to remove those obvious relationship photos. Funny how Facebook can keep the past in the present if you let it!


    1. Glad it inspired you Nad! Photos a tricky. I keep most of mine because they’re tucked away in albums and I like having a timeline of my life. That being said, most of the photos I have on display need to be updated! If you want to get rid of them though, I say no need for drama just throw them in the trash. And I agree about facebook!
