Stay focused and feel better

There are no shortage of distractions around us all the time, and we seem to have no problem falling “victim” to them. Even when there’s something we really want to take care of, it’s been on the to-do list for weeks, there’s still time to check facebook, make a snack, take a nap, do a load of laundry, call your mom, and on and on it goes.

It happens to me all the time. Every week when it’s time to sit down and write, or every month when I need to reconcile my accounts in QuickBooks, these are important projects that I enjoy doing or feel good about accomplishing. Yet, I find ways to avoid.

The amazing thing is though, when I am able to completely devote my attention to the task at hand, I feel great doing it. It becomes a meditation, because in that moment I am fully present and engaged. The task becomes enjoyable, no matter how much I may have been dreading it (taxes!), and when it’s done, I get to bask in the feeling of accomplishment.

When you allow your attention to be pulled a million different ways while you’re trying to take care of something, the task quickly becomes stressful and anxiety producing. You miss out on the opportunity to be in the moment and enjoy it for what it is. However, when you stay focused, you simply feel better.

Having a daily meditation practice definitely helps hone one’s ability to focus in any given moment. However, even the most seasoned meditator needs a little assistance once in a while. What I have come to adore is an essential oil focus blend. I roll it directly on my skin at the back of my neck, and this divine combination of essential oils helps melt the distractions away and puts me into a state of intense focus. Though of course I know it’s based in science, it feels truly magical.

Be well,

  1. I really needed to read this today! I have been so distracted and trying to manage several tasks at once. After I read this, I cooked breakfast and just cooked breakfast. Then, washed dishes and just did that! I am going to make this my goal today instead of being a stressed scatterbrain. Everything is a meditation – I love that. Thank you!
Ps. I will be in LA for a short 2-day visit next week, and I was hoping to see you for our 9-month celebration!
