As a woman, it is normal to live in a cycle, rather than a straight line. Your body goes through a natural cycle every 4 weeks or so, with four distinct phases of change in hormones, energy levels, physical strength, and mental capacity. It doesn’t make sense to expect the same level of productivity, output, and physical activity all month long all the time.
A few months ago I read Alisa Vitti’s Woman Code, and it provided a big shift for me in regards to how I view my body’s changing needs and desires throughout my menstrual cycle. Most significant was learning to eat foods that optimize my hormonal balance through every phase.
Changing how I eat during my cycle got me on a very consistent rhythm. I now use Alisa’s recommendations every time my boyfriend goes grocery shopping (that’s right ladies! He has the list on his phone. Swoon…), which helps me decide what to cook and provides inspiration for different meals throughout the month.
I am dealing with some very severe menstrual pain at this point in my life, which is inspiring a serious healing journey. I will keep you posted along the way through this blog. In the mean time, I want to share a smoothie recipe I created packed with optimal foods for the menstrual phase. It’s delicious, loaded with nutrients, and super nourishing when you’ve got your period.
Reach for this instead of the ice cream. Your body will thank you for it!
Ultimate Moon-Time Smoothie
I encourage you to play with quantities to find what works best for you, as I eye-ball everything.
– coconut water, about 1.5 cups
– 1/2 avocado
– 1 steamed beet
– 1/4-1/2 cup organic frozen blackberries
– 1/4-1/2 cup organic frozen blueberries
– large handful of organic spinach and/or kale
– 1 organic Persian cucumber
– scoop of protein powder
– dash of cinnamon
– ice, if you like it extra cold
Place all ingredients in a high powered blender (I recommend Blendtec), and blend until smooth. Enjoy!!
