What to do when you don’t know what to do

There are times in life when you’re presented with a challenging situation or a difficult decision, and you just don’t know what to do. You find yourself constantly weighing pros and cons and coming up with if/then scenarios, but nothing is speaking to you as the “right” move.

I don’t believe there necessarily is such a thing as the “right” move. There are options and each one has it’s own potential consequences, both favorable and unfavorable. Yet we all want to feel good about the choices we make, and that can only happen when done from a place of strength, or with a deep feeling of peace in your heart.

So what do you do when you can’t find that?

Surrender the decision or situation to God/Goddess/Universe/Higher Power/your Angels/Love/Divine Intelligence/all of the above.

There are many ways to do this, but one of my favorites is something I learned in Al-Anon, and works wonderfully for everybody.

Put it in your God Box.

Literally, choose a box, decorate it any way you like (or not at all), and designate this your God box (or Love Box, or Angel Box, etc.). Whenever something is weighing heavily on you, write it on a small piece of paper and put it in your God box, trusting and taking for granted that the answer will come or the situation will be resolved for the highest good of all concerned.

Surrendering in this context means giving up your need to control and manage all the details. It also means that you trust that the best solution is on it’s way or already happening. You don’t stop taking action, you simply release the tension and angst around it, take one step at a time, and be open to the guidance, serendipities, and synchronicities that present themselves.

When you learn to trust and have faith in a power greater than you, your stress level dissipates and your enthusiasm rises. You know, on some level, even in the midst of great difficulty, that all is well, you are supported, you are loved, and you are cared for. All is well (even if it doesn’t feel that way in the moment).

Please take a moment to share below how you feel about this idea and/or what you do in those moments when you don’t know what to do.

Love, Sasha
