Life can be stressful, at times overwhelming, and the truth is, you never know what any particular day is going to bring. It’s easy to be positive and productive when it’s smooth sailing, but what about when the storm hits out of nowhere?

I’m a morning superfan, but that certainly was not always the case. In fact I used to warn people to avoid me in the morning for their own personal wellbeing. It’s no wonder I was a complete wreck during my first full time job outside of University.

I was a high school teacher at a nonpublic school for emotionally disturbed teenagers (State designated label, not mine). Stressful doesn’t even begin to describe what my days felt like, and I dreaded hearing my alarm go off every morning. Even though I loved those kids, working with them tested all of my emotional limits, and I would inevitably go home and sob at the end of most days, just to release the tension of holding it all together while falling apart inside. 

If I had known then what I know now, I’m certain my experience would have been vastly different. 

You do not have control over the unknowns in your workday, or any other part of your day for that matter, and being able to manage the inevitable explosions with grace and compassion requires resiliency.

The good news is, you do have control over how you start your day.

Now I relish my mornings! I focus on what makes me feel energized, calm, and inspired. I take excellent care of myself in the morning so I can then focus my attention on taking care of customers, clients, and team members.

Phone tucked away last night. Sound machine on for 30 minutes prior to going to sleep. I woke up today at 6:30am which was 30 minutes before my alarm today. Bathroom, water, stretch, coffee. A quick work task to-do. Shower. All before Amina woke up. Helped her with her breakfast (grabbed mine too) and headed into 9am mtg.

I would describe my mornings Pre Routine as a grab bag or a melange. I sort of did the same things every day, but I was never getting up at a regular time, and my evenings before were just as random. Sasha, recommended a routine that met me where I’m at and built in time that I never would have made time for before, such as taking a shower at a set time, easy to forget when you’re sheltering in place! I love having a document I can go back to and reorient myself.
