Create your own opportunities for success

As I settled into my new home, my artistic pursuits started nudging me to be more ambitious. I wanted to break free from my sketchbook, and dedicate more time and energy to painting on canvas (my true artistic love).  And, I wanted a space to show my work beyond the confines of Instagram’s algorithm.

These desires posed a couple problems:

  1. How do I make the time to paint, and complete a project?
  2. Once the painting is complete, how can I share it?

It’s all well and good to find a place locally to show my work, but I don’t have a body of work to show just yet. I needed a way to jumpstart the process. Something to work towards that would keep me accountable, and realized the best way to do that, was to create my own art show.

It just so happens I work with incredibly talented and creative people, and after doing a pulse check, discovered they were excited to have an art show to work towards too. Thus, Creators Club was born!

To keep us on track, we adopted the 12-Week Year method, set a date for the launch of our online exhibit, and got to work on our projects.

Having a shared deadline was the absolute secret sauce to staying on track with my project, and it turns out, that was true for everyone that had a piece to show. We met every couple of weeks to chat about how things were going, and we shared our progress along the way. I pushed myself to paint even when I was tired and just wanted to flop in front of Netflix (and then painting would give me a surge of energy).

The whole experience showed me that opportunities are not always something external that you have to go out and find. Sometimes you can decide what you want, tap into the resources right in front of you, and bring the opportunity to life.

I’m thrilled to have my piece in this online exhibit, and to share this space with incredible artists. Please enjoy our creations

I’m curious, what’s an opportunity that you want to bring to life? Let me know in the comments.
